Are you concerned about having better parks? How about the streets in your community? Have you ever wondered why your school is located where it is? Do you wish someone would do something to make life better for you, your family, or your community? If so, apply to be a part of the 2018 Future Leaders in Planning Summer Youth Leadership Development Program!

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is looking for high school students who want to learn about our seven-county Chicago region and urban planning while interacting with other students from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. CMAP is interested in your ideas about how to make northeastern Illinois a better place to live, go to school, work, and play.
About FLIP
Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP) is a leadership development opportunity offered free-of-charge to students who can contribute ideas to help create a better future for our region. The program began in September 2008 and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Participants in the 2018 summer program will learn more about the northeastern Illinois region and share their thoughts with other students from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties. Participants will also meet and interact with regional leaders who make key planning decisions in our communities.

Curriculum
FLIP students will learn about past, present, and future regional issues from elected officials, community leaders, and CMAP staff. Through multimedia tools, interactive activities, and field trips, students will go “behind the scenes” to explore our region’s communities. Participants will explore the benefits and challenges of planning issues including transportation, air quality, land use, and water supply while engaging with other students to think about the ways planning could be improved. Not only will students learn how the region works, but they'll contribute their own ideas about how residents’ lives can be improved through better planning.

Program Benefits
FLIP is a great opportunity for students to learn about the world of urban planning and to get hands-on experience working to address planning issues in their community.  FLIP is an opportunity to:

Expand and enhance your soft-skills to become a better listener, observer, writer, and presenter
Learn how to become a community advocate, how to serve on a community board, and how to facilitate a meeting.
